Scientists have described how the increase in the duration of sleep affects weight and overall health.

The staff of the University of Cape town decided to find out how sleep can affect health. They analyzed seven scientific papers related to the topic of sleep duration.

It turned out that the people who first slept a little, and then began to increase the period of sleep, normalized metabolism and improved cardiac function.

Studied work included data about the lives of 138 adults. They were divided into several groups:

  • Healthy people with normal sleep;
  • Healthy people who have had sleep problems;
  • People who are diagnosed with hypertension and insufficient sleep;
  • People who slept a little and were overweight.
  • – Sleep mode of the volunteers was changed from three to six weeks. The total period of their sleep has increased by 21-177 minutes, said the researchers.

    Moreover, the subjects improved the heart, they have a decreased appetite in the evening hours, almost lost the craving for salty and sweet foods. This has caused a reduction in food and calorie consumption when compared with what people ate before. That allowed easier and faster to get rid of excess pounds and effective to maintain normal weight.
