Scientists have done extensive research and found that best of all calms the child who is in pain.
To better appease the children after a nasty medical procedures (e.g. injections) they were given breast milk or sweet drinks (sugar water). However, recently Italian scientists have found that the best baby soothe mothers ‘ hands.
Scientists selected 80 healthy three-day children, who were taken through the heel blood. They wanted to find out which four ways will best ease their pain: breast milk from a bottle; mix bottle; breast milk from his mother; and sugar water from his mother.
The researchers observed the children’s responses to pain. In addition, they used a non-invasive device to measure oxygen levels in the brain of infants (it helped to identify areas of the brain involved with pain and also affect the relief of pain).
– Mother’s hands in combination with breast feeding and glucose is much better to relieve pain than only breast milk or glucose, says study author Sergio Demarini, doctor of the Italian Institute of protection of motherhood and childhood in Trieste.
Researchers have identified several methods that will help the child to cope with the pain. These methods include breast feeding, sugar water, swaddling in a blanket or the finding of the infant at the breast mom.
When the child was given sugar water, the cortex of his brain is less responsive to pain than the breast milk from a bottle. Breastfeeding gave more positive effect, which could overwhelm even the pain from the injection.
