Having been on the Natura Siberica farm in Khakassia, our advertising Director Olga Borisova learned how to grow healing herbs in accordance with world standards, and why only the locals can cope with the gathering.
How I got there? And why?
As you can see, I very rarely write something:) And mostly — in Exсel’E. But when Natura Siberica called our girl in the press tour to Khakassia, to see how grown Siberian herbs, all decided that to go better for me. Because I’m the only one in our team cottager-gardener with experience. “If someone has something and knows the birds and the bees,” — said told me to collect the suitcase.
So this is my first attempt (please don’t judge strictly:)
And the first trip to Siberia, too.
Was to get to the Natura Siberica farm in Khakassia, it is necessary to cross two-thirds of the country and 4 time zones. At midnight, fly out of Moscow, and after 4 hours, waking up from airplane sleep of oblivion, we find that under the wing is still “about something sings the green sea of a taiga”. And after half an hour landed in the early Siberian morning.
Then — 3 hours by car, on strangely empty roads. No oncoming or overtaking traffic. The entire population of Khakassia 500 thousand people. About as much as in my district in Moscow. Natura Siberica farm is near the village of Shushenskoye, where the exiled V. I. Lenin. Once you understand what the wilderness he was banished then:)
Why am I here?
But Lenin okay, what am I doing here?:)
In 2013, Natura Siberica bet on Siberian herbs. Decided that they should speak the whole world. The fact that “we do missiles and blocked the Yenisei” (the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric power station located in Khakassia), known to all, and about herbs — no. Disorder.
The farm decided to do for science and all international standards. It was a totally new experience: in Europe the basics of organic farming founded in 1946, and we have no one to Natura Siberica these standards did not work. Soil samples from 15 different sites were sent to the laboratory ICEA (Italy) and CERES (Germany), where they were subjected to careful analysis.
Based on this analysis we have selected three “earth leaders”. And of the 3, one. When choosing a site there are a number of additional requirements: the land must not be used for agricultural work for at least 3 years, and next there should be no harmful enterprises.
Found in the Khakassia Republic a place in General, the problem was not. Chose the site where previously were only grazing. Businesses around there close. The area of the farm is 33 hectares, on the territory of only the fields, where they grow 25 species of rare Siberian herbs, and is a single storey house. This is a workshop for processing of collected herbs in the extracts, and it employs 15 employees residing in neighboring villages.
The process of obtaining a certificate to conduct cosmetic organic farms took 2 years.
That there is grown? And how?
For plants created conditions as close to natural environment. Unlike Western organic farms, which often are grown by only 1-3 species of plants in the Republic of Khakassia retain diversity.
Accordingly, there remains and natural balance with the world of insects and birds. For example, there is no need to create “hotels for bees”, they are well and so naturally.
For weed control we use the scheme of the multi-year crop rotations.
When we show some plants, I wonder: sea buckthorn grows well on my dacha outside Moscow, why build it here? And these little blue flowers (Siberian geranium) is mistaken for weeds.
But, it turns out, sea buckthorn in Siberia quite a different color, it’s bright bright orange, and contains many times more useful components, and geranium Siberian rich in essential oils, which normalize the work of sebaceous and sweat glands.
Living conditions are harsh. And not only for people, for plants, too. Winter is 9 months in June could easily fall in the snow, and short summers can be hot and dry. The temperature during the year ranges from – 30 to + 30. Over the summer, the plants tend to gather the maximum quantity of vitality. Therefore, the “level of survival and adaptability” of the local plants significantly higher than those that live in the mustache does not blow in the middle band.
I, as a woman-ogorodnia, is particularly interesting.
Among plants, by the way, there is a unique adaptogens that survived the ice age, was adapted to him first, and then to new climatic conditions. For example, Rhodiola rosea. She is listed in the Red book, collect in natural conditions it is forbidden, but on the farm in Khakassia it is grown. Rhodiola extract is speeds up metabolism and prevents hypothermia: protect from cold, it does not dilating blood vessels. So it is part of many of the funds Natura Siberica sensitive skin.
Under the terms of the certificate СERES almost all work is done on the farm manually. Manually is collecting, planting, digging. There is a tractor, but he only plows the field. It is strictly forbidden to leave the farm. Suddenly he will pass through the land, where were the chemicals?..
Apart from this tractor, shears, sickle, pitchfork, shovel, rakes – the main and only tools.
As fertilizer use only digested grass from the farm (compost). Even manure can not be, otherwise it too will have to be certified )
After the herbs are collected, they are dried in a natural way and processed in the extract.
This activity is also strictly regulated by a separate ekosertifikat.
The extractor is basically a huge thermos. It laid the grass and water.
And it will all be in it to languish. Like tea, only under pressure. The formula of “welding” is simple: 1 kg herbs + 1 litre water= 1 litre of extract at the outlet. This thermos can produce per day up to 2.5 tons of the extract. Its capacity covers the needs of Natura Siberica Siberian herbs.
Then the extract is bottled, Packed in cans, cans sign it and send to their own Natura Siberiсa plant in Dmitrov near Moscow.
Under the terms of the ekosertifikat inspector who visits the farm 2 times per year, can measure the volume of the resulting extracts and to correlate with the number of products in which it was used.
Who are the wild plants?
The second direction of the farm — the collection of wild plants (Wild Harvesting), the plants grown in their natural conditions. For this season, usually in August, when the concentration of valuable substances in plants reaches its peak, Natura Siberica is hiring 10 additional employees for a fee.
The collection is also regulated. If you collect the “tops” on 1 square meter you must leave at least two Mature plants with seeds that will continue to reproduce. If “roots” — you can dig up annuals and perennials it is necessary to leave part of the root.
The collection is made in a wicker basket, no tape, plastic, and polyethylene! Otherwise the plants may rot.
The tools wielded collectors, you can’t take home and work with them on the site. If this happens, the instrument to be disinfected.
The work attracted only the local population, representatives of small Nations: they know all the trails in the forest and are not afraid to go into the forest full of mosquitoes. And according to the regulations in the course of collecting can only use natural repellents. No sprays).
In total, the farm in Khakassia collected 47 species of wild plants.
Gathering — a rather rare phenomenon, today there are few places you can find. But here in Siberia, still places to eat! Therefore, Natura Siberica want to focus on this direction.
We were born to make a fairy tale come true?
Plans Natura Siberica — construction on-site farm eco hotel. Here you can enjoy the peace, immerse yourself in the digital detox (the Internet barely takes) and try the local cuisine. They say that fern is not inferior to the exotic asparagus and dessert “frozen cranberries + Siberian honey + pine nuts” with Linden tea – all gastronomic pleasure!:)
Of activities and leisure that is supposed to take a bath and to participate in the collection of herbs. Well Spa Natura Siberica, of course.
In General, the future looks so tempting that I’m thinking about — not to go if I get writers Beauty Insider? Suddenly until Natura Siberica will build the hotel, some of the editors are fond of herbs-pistils-stamens and drive legally instead of me?
